Find the Source Before Low Oil Damages the Engine
Engine oil lubricates bearings, camshafts, pistons, timing components, turbochargers, and other internal parts. Even a small leak can lower the oil level over time and allow friction, heat, and wear to increase.
Oil can travel across engine surfaces, subframes, splash shields, and underbody panels before reaching the ground, so the visible drip point may not be the actual source. A complete inspection helps identify the failed gasket, seal, housing, line, or component before repairs begin.

Where Engine Oil Leaks Commonly Develop
Valve Cover Gaskets
Valve cover gaskets may harden, shrink, crack, or leak around spark-plug wells and cylinder-head sealing surfaces.
Oil Pan & Drain Plug
Oil pans, gaskets, sealant joints, drain plugs, washers, and threaded openings are inspected for leakage and damage.
Timing Cover & Engine Seals
Timing covers, crankshaft seals, camshaft seals, front covers, and related joints may leak as seals age or pressure increases.
Oil Filter Housings, Coolers and Lubrication Components
Oil Filter Housing
Filter housings, adapter gaskets, caps, O-rings, and mounting surfaces may leak and allow oil to spread across the engine.
Engine Oil Cooler
Oil cooler seals, lines, fittings, and heat exchangers are checked for external leakage and possible oil-coolant contamination.

External Leaks and Internal Oil Consumption Are Different Problems
External Oil Leak
Oil escapes through a failed gasket, seal, housing, plug, line, or connection and becomes visible on the engine or ground.
Internal Oil Consumption
Oil may burn inside the engine because of piston rings, valve seals, turbo seals, PCV problems, or internal wear.
Both Can Occur Together
Some vehicles lose oil externally while also consuming oil internally, requiring separate testing and repair planning.
PCV Problems Can Contribute to Oil Leaks
The positive crankcase ventilation system regulates pressure and routes engine vapors back into the intake. A restricted or failed PCV system may increase crankcase pressure and force oil through gaskets, seals, and weak engine connections.
Cleaning and UV Dye May Help Locate Slow Leaks
Heavy oil residue can hide the original leak source. The engine area may need to be cleaned before reinspection. For slow or intermittent leaks, approved fluorescent dye and ultraviolet inspection may help trace fresh oil back to the source.
Low Oil Can Cause Serious Engine Damage
Continued oil loss may reduce lubrication and oil pressure, damaging bearings, timing components, camshafts, turbochargers, pistons, and other internal parts. Oil on hot exhaust components may also create smoke, odors, and a potential fire concern.
